Going out on a Limb..taking a RISK!

Good morning Zombies.

Something has been bothering me, and I wanted to vent a little and share some of my opinions as well. This post is mainly to get some thoughts off my mind (after all this is MY blog) and get some opinions from others.

When I began my mineral makeup journey, I was na├»ve to everything minerals/pigments had to offer. I was also very unaware of the seriousness and controversy surrounding ingredients in mineral eyeshadow. I personally do not care what I put on my face, as long as it doesn’t cause me a reaction. I am 30 years old and I have been wearing makeup for well over 15 years now. Any damage I may do to my face is already done.  (And it still looks pretty damn good..haha!)

I’m becoming more familiar with mineral makeup/pigments and Indie makeup companies as I continue my makeup obsession and blog as well as following all of my very informative fellow bloggers. I’ve ‘met’ or been introduced to some very beautiful, honest, and creative Indie makeup owners. Women and men with a passion, a dream, something they care deeply about, and want to share with the world. I’ve also read some really nasty things about some of these people also. I have always kept my opinions to myself, or tried to stay extremely neutral. That was until I stumbled upon an online forum meant for “rants” about said companies. Because I will NOT waste my time joining this forum, I am going to voice my concerns about this here. (And may lose a few followers at the same time.)

It saddens and sickens me that companies are being attacked for creating a unique product. Some are even being accused of “copycatting” other companies. I DO recognize that some companies are repackaging straight mica and distributing as their own, and those companies, I will steer clear of. But companies with a well established customer base, a good product, a good name, are being sought out and attacked. Do you people really have so much time in the day to sit around and read the ingredients on every single mineral eyeshadow/product? Really? And will it really matter in 5 years? The really scary part about this, to me, is that these people are ruining the fun. Makeup is FUN! Don’t make it tedious for us who really enjoy playing with color.

I will continue to purchase from and review products that I find amazing or interesting and that I think others might like. There have been a few times I’ve come across repackaged products, but I do not announce it to my blog followers, I simply stop ordering from these companies. I will continue doing that regardless of the reputation of the company and/or what others may think. But at the same time, if said company carries a color I simply adore, I will continue to purchase it. At the end of the day, my makeup passion is for ME, and I like to share what I find with my blog followers. And if you disagree with me, I guess you don’t have to read my blog.

My favorite and most trusted Indie companies to date are:
  • High Voltage Cosmetics: Jasmine is so sweet and really works with her customers to create a unique product.
  • Evil Shades: Andrea is a kick ass chick how creates beautifully pigmented products.
  • Fyrinnae: Such unique and beautiful eyeshadow, I’ve never really owned anything like the colors I have from Fyrinnae. Totally worth the wait (if any).
  • Hi-Fi Cosmetics: Veronica is gorgeous and kind and willing to create something her customer will love. Her new Rockstar pigments are so sparkly and awesome.
  • Concrete Minerals: Emily has created a fun product with tons of unique colors.

Companies I hope to review in the near future (this list will continue to grow):

Meow Cosmetics

Morgana Minerals

Moi Minerals

Aromaleigh (I can’t wait to try Victoria’s Revenge!)

Now I’d love to hear your opinions on this matter. Please, if you’re an Indie company, share the worth as well. I love hearing both sides and I’m not bashing anyone, I’m simply getting some thoughts off my mind.

  1. I hate the drama-llama. I try and stay away from it as FARRRR as I can. It's sad that people feel the need to be keyboard warriors (or rogues... since... you know) and 'attack' others.

I think it's ok to warn others about possible re-packaging since people's hard earned money is being spent. If you're like me you don't have much to spend and like to get good honest products from good honest people. It makes me feel good. On the other hand, going nuts and throwing insults and accusations doesn't solve anything. Personally I hate reading people 'hating' on others.

    Bad vibes, man, bad vibes!

  2. In the immortal words of Eric Cartman: 'Whatever, I do what I want!' Badmouthing a company isn't going to put me off them - at least where badmouthing is unfounded. I don't want to get ripped off, you know - its going to put me off the people who made the comments! Behaviours like the ones you mentioned are total bullshit. We should support people starting businesses even if its for no other reason that we get beautiful make-up without the high end price. I'm waiting for my first Evil Shades order and it was so cheap! How can people not get behind that?!

  3. I'm not much into the indie companies cuz my true passion is nail lacquer...but I do love seeing those of you that post EOTD and FOTD using these products and it is an area I'm wanting to order from. So, oustide of the fact that small business bashing is wrong and people should purchase and support these truly awesome inovators...I don't know what else to say.

  4. You go, girl!! You've said what's on a lot of our minds. We all have enough drama in our own little corners of the world - we don't need to log on to the internets to do something we enjoy only to find that one of our fave companies are being bashed. If you don't like them - fine - order from somebody else. You can give your opinion, but no need to slam a company/somebody. And you really feel like you have to, email your BFF or something and air your grievances there. Can't we all just get along? LOL

  5. I work hard for my money, so I like to know what is repacked. If I want TKB pops, I will order them myself. I am surprised by the company owner on vacation due to stress that is spending half of her time doing her own smearing and tearing down of another company. I personally enjoy reading blogs about experiences with makeup. These blogs have inspired me to try new products.

  6. Agreed lady! That forum left a bad taste in my mouth. I made my 1 comment about how I thought it was basically a waste of time, and didn't look back.
They probably had some response but I'd rather use my time looking for things that interest me, not things that are full of hostility and negativity.
    BOOYAH!

  7. Thanks for the honesty everyone! I really needed to vent, and how better to vent to but people who understand where I'm coming from. :)

  8. I hate that website. I don't order from Aromaleigh anymore because I don't like how Miss K has presented herself, but I'm certainly not going to sit down and spend HOURS AND HOURS dissecting every product she has so I can try and find something wrong with it! That's just being fucking ridiculous, even I can attest to the fact that she makes wonderful, unique products. I do like to know if someplace repackages so I don't waste my money, but blogging for the last 6 months or so has really opened my eyes and I think I can usually tell by looking at the website if the colors are repackaged. I hate when there's drama, because makeup is SO important to me, and as dumb and shallow as that sounds, I'm sure you can agree with me. It's so fun and exciting and a real creative outlet for me, so I hate when dumb shit has to happen.

  9. Makeup should be fun. They're making it so NOT fun!! Do what makes you happy. Leave the drama at the curb.

  10. Amen :( makeup is supposed to be fun, but it's ridiculous how much drama there is. I wouldn't mind there being an outlet for voicing complaints if companies ignore them, but that was blatantly just an AL-hate site (I dont even like AL but even I think it was OTT)

I try to stay away from it these days, and I don't really have much interest in ingredients lists, since I've not had a reaction to anything yet. I'm just interested in high pigment at a low cost, from nice honest people :)
