Evil Shades Cosmetics- Buyer Beware

Good afternoon Zombies!

It's with a heavy heart that I have to write this post. In the last few months, I've noticed a decline in the customer service from Evil Shades Cosmetics. What was once a thriving indie cosmetics company with wonderful products and fantastic customer service/product turnaround has now turned into yet another indie business gone awry. I've put off this post for a few weeks, as the owner of Evil Shades Cosmetics and I were pretty close friends. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt that maybe she was having a rough time and therefore her business was suffering. Maybe, she'd turn it all around and get those refunds and orders out from November 2012. :/

But, I believe I have been fooled. I've noticed a growing number of loyal customers going without promised orders or refunds by reading the Evil Shades Facebook fan page, emails being ignored by Evil Shades, customers being blamed for their orders going missing, USPS being blamed for stealing/losing packages, etc. All of it is no longer making sense to me and sadly, I have come to the conclusion that quite a few people have been swindled.

I write this post based on fact- several close friends are Evil Shades customers waiting on an order or a refund from Evil Shades- some as old as November 2012. I too had placed an order in early October 2012 hoping to receive it before Halloween. Halloween came and went- Christmas came and went. I finally had to ask about my order, to which I received a "It was returned to me" response. The tracking # she sent me never updated once electronically, so I didn't understand how it would have come back to her without at least updating on the USPS website. She assured me another one was being mailed out- still no updates on the tracking # after weeks. January 2013 approached and I finally told her to just send me a refund as clearly the package was never going to make it to its destination. I did finally receive my refund of $12.00 and some change- but some people have just not been as lucky. (I also did receive a package from her- and the tracking # on the package wasn't even one that had been generated and emailed to me.)

Another close friend of mine (I've met her in person and have no reason to doubt her and was given permission to tell this story) entrusted the owner of Evil Shades (Andrea) with a fair amount of money to purchase some limited edition nail polish that Andrea had for sale- Andrea was having a rough time of it and had to make a cross country move to Colorado so was selling off some of her nail polish. Andrea had my friend PayPal her the funds on March 30th, 2013 (including shipping costs) and assured her she'd ship them that same week- they too met up once and had a nice time together in Colorado, so my friend really trusted Andrea. Weeks came and went and no polish. To this day, still no polish and no refund. Andrea told my friend that the polish was shipped to another customer on accident and that said customer would return it and Andrea would ship it to my friend. Not an update since, with the exception of Andrea telling my friend that she'd open up a claim with USPS (after asking my friend for her tracking # to check on it. Isn't that something she should have had?) to investigate where the package ended up. IF, she'd accidentally sent the package to a customer who was going to ship it back, why the need for a claim with USPS? Things are still not adding up to me.

I've also received a number of messages to the same effect- people missing orders from months ago, being told they'd receive a refund and not getting one, getting the run around and excuses from Andrea, etc. All of this going on, and an email notification went out recently for a Memorial Day's Sale at Evil Shades. Why on earth would she run a sale with the state of the business it is in was beyond me. Andrea claimed the email was sent out on accident and cancelled that sale. Why was the cart still functioning? Why hadn't she closed it down in order to get caught up on older orders? These are questions people had been asking and getting no direct response to. Finally on June 10th, 2013- I noticed that the Evil Shades website had been suspended.

I hope that Andrea has shut down the website in order to get caught up and all existing orders and refunds and intends to make it right by her customers. I realize sometimes life throws us hard times that are out of our control and that we must first take care of that before our business, but updating your customers is NOT too much to ask in those cases especially with indie customer/owner relationships these days. In the meantime, if the website opens again, I'd be very wary of placing an order until there is clear evidence that customers have been taken care of.

Please read this post as well regarding Evil Shades Cosmetics.

  1. It makes me sad that you had to write this, too. I counted Andrea as a friend and I just don't understand why she's doing this :(

    1. i ordered twice, both orders took a long time, but she's just one person, and it was worth the wait. so i never thought my third order would just result in her never reply and stealing money from me. she changed all of her personal info and just basically screwed us. why?! is there a way to get in touch/report/ her?

    2. I talked to Andrea through email when my order was delayed in 2011 and she confided some personal things. I felt bad for her because she made excuses: she had kids, a sick husband she took care of, and supposedly "people were harassing her and posting her address" and "postal workers were stealing her packages." The last 2 things were lies but the rest was true. She also said she had pneumonia and I'm not sure if that was true or just a lie. I think she just buckled under the stress of running a small business and being the breadwinner/mom. I feel kind of bad for her for having so much on her plate, but the fact that she just took down her page instead of coming back and explaining is ridiculous. Also like someone said the quality of her products was inconsistent - I got a good batch but the samples were underwhelming and didn't look like the pic.

  2. This makes me sad too. I considered Andrea a friend and that's why I placed an order.

  3. This is so sad and so upsetting. I'd actually met her twice and thought we'd had a wonderful time forging an in-person friendship, which is why I entrusted so much money to her for those nail polishes. I am just hoping that money went somewhere where it was truly needed. I really love the Evil Shades products I have, but it's just so hard to use them now after being taken advantage of by a "friend." :( I am glad you are putting this out there so people will be aware of what's going on and not be swindled out of any of their hard-earned dollars.

  4. Wow, I actually used to count her as something of an internet friend, because I "knew" her on Makeupalley and Blogger and Twitter...I bought from her once before, way back in 2010 before any of this ever happened, and she seemed to have one of the best indie brands out there. I'm a little shocked all this has happened! I hope it all gets sorted out.

  5. When I last ordered from her a long time ago I had a mostly good experience. I hope people get refunded for unreceived orders.

  6. Oh dear. I put in an order right after my birthday, back in March, and haven't received anything, no notes or order status updates, nothing :\ I'd ordered from her in the past with no problems, and my all-time favorite nude lippie is from Evil Shades.

I just went to the website and got a screen that says this account has been suspended :(

I know that we all go through some seriously hard times, and I hope that things work out for her. I just wish I'd gotten my stuff.

  7. I never ordered from her. I didn't appreciate the way she approached complaints on her facebook page. And I refuse to order from any company where I see customers constantly asking for updates on their orders. I can't think of a single time I looked at her page and didn't see someone asking for an update, or hearing her complaining about reasons for delays, personal illness, etc. This is why I don't believe in becoming friends with people I'm doing business with. It blurs the lines, makes you feel guilty for wanting your stuff and gives the seller an excuse to 'take their time'. I hope everyone gets their money back but if this continues to follow the pattern of several other indie (for lack of a better word) crooks, I wouldn't hold my breath. Very sorry for the people hurt by all of this.

  8. Even is the shop were to open up, I would never shop there again. I was lied to several times about 'lost' orders and I don't appreciate that.

  9. I'm so sorry, truly, because you trusted her (as did others).

I had to fight to get my money back--and she accused me of already having my package (tracking never updated). Thankfully Paypal found in my favor.

As a person with chronic illness, I DO understand how life gets in the way. This is not the case. But again, I am sorry you had to write this, and that so many people got hurt (and not just customers, but her friends).

    *Hugs*

  10. Oh no, this is very sad to read...I hope things get resolved soon. Sigh.

  11. I made a Paypal complaint and escalated it to a claim and was able to get a refund from the website. I made certain to note the website was down/suspended, I'm just happy to have received my refund. It's a shame, I ordered from Evil Shades in the past and was quite happy hence why I ordered again. But once I saw this article and saw what was happening to others I just opted to get my money back. Hopefully those of you who have been wronged will get your money back soon too.

  12. I, too, have been duped by her - placed an order in January and was foolish enough to add to the order in May - haven't received a thing except a headache. I, too, feel for anyone going through hard times, but lying and/or cheating should never be the answer. Chalk it up to lesson learned...

  13. I am a "victim" of this and found this post by Googling if anyone was talking about it. I ordered in March during the sale, making it my second order from them. A few days ago, I saw someone post on the FaceBook page that they were ready to take legal action, so I wrote a post agreeing with them. I checked yesterday and saw that our posts were deleted. Evil Shades is watching their FaceBook page and getting rid of comments they don't like. I spent $28 on items I can't find anywhere else (especially for that price) and really want my package. I'd rather have a refund than nothing, though. What should we do? With her email apparently deleted (according to another buyer) and the website gone, what if her FaceBook disappears, too?

    1. If you paid via Paypal then I would start a complaint. If you paid with Paypal via your credit card then you can file with your credit card company.

    3. Omg I have gone through the same thing with Facefront cosmetics. I ordered from the in May of 2012 without problems. So I ordered from them again in December 2012 an order of $250.00. When I started receiving orders I had placed AFTER that on from other companies I started to call. Despite several calls during different times and days no on EVER answered the phone. Despite leaving several emails I was ignored. I checked to see if they had a Facebook page and was moritfied to see NUMEROUS complaints with the same issues from 3-4 months prior to my order. The manager Ingrid Chapman finally responded via email stating that the package was sent. Several days pass no package. When I asked for a refund I was told the package had been sent. I NEVER received a tracking number and when I demanded one I was ignored. Then when I threatened to take legal action she started sending nasty emails. I filed with the BBB of which they never responded to the complaint so after 30 days the complaint is filed unresolved. When I emailed her that I was filing with the Attorney General's office she sent a rude message insulting my grammar saying that she hopes that letter was better written. The audacity when 1) you stole my money and lied, 2) the letter was written properly and was not the point even if it wasn't who cares. Anyway it is BEYOND me why they would continue to send email sales and take orders KNOWING they had NO INTENTIONS OF SENDING THE PRODUCTS IS RATCHET. We are ALL struggling. They no longer have a website in the US but they did in Brazil but I haven't checked lately. I am trying to get a class action lawsuit but need more people. If you know anyone PLEASE contact me.

    4. Her Facebook did go down. I almost feel like there's no point posting now but I want to keep this thread alive. A lot of indie companies are so small that customers give up after a while. I hope more bloggers will call them out.

  14. This is really sad. I don't have any missing orders but I did notice that there was a difference in the quality of the last batch of items I received. Still, I loved the brand. You couldn't beat the colors that the price and overall I had a much better experience with E.S. than with another popular indie brand.

  16. To be honest, Evil Shades was shitbricks even back in 2011 when I made a blogpost about it. At that time, a friend of mine also got fucked. This is nothing new. It just surprises me how long she was able to keep it up :/

I hope everyone gets their money back and that Andrea never re-opens her store.

  17. I also don't like drama but I don't like to be ripped off either. I made an order on 26th November 2012 (almost a year ago) and I still haven't received my package and Andrea of Evil Shades has ignored all my many emails of the past year, as well as tweets and facebook comments regarding this matter. I have not received a single response let alone a refund and I really liked the products I bought in my first order. I really regret making a second order and I gave her so much time to send the package or even send me an email explaining her self. Not to mention the patience I gave her when she expressed problems with snow etc. on her website. This is very disappointing and not the experience I have ever got from any other indie company.
Sorry for the large paragraph, but I had to vent and Ms. Evil Shades has been ignoring me.

    1. Wow it's amazing how her excuses change. When I ordered in 2011 she claimed someone at her post office was stealing all the packages. When I pushed a bit more she said that the guy was suddenly caught and would be going to jail, and then I got my order in the mail. It would be interesting if everyone posted the excuse they got. She seems to say something different to everyone.

  18. My first experience with Andrea was in 2011. She was polite, but I thought it was odd that she made excuses about delivery problems. She accused a post office worker of "stealing" all her lost packages and later claimed they got "arrested." I thought it was all too coincidental that there was a thief at her post office, given how much drama surrounded her. I got my package a couple months late and while I got a discount code to make up for it, I had to ask for it.

She also blogged about the same 2 or 3 internet trolls harassing her whenever anyone questioned their order status. At the risk of sounding cynical, I wonder if that was just a diversion. I don't think a few comments from trolls were worth all the hubbub that she caused over them. The entire focus of her site went toward these "bullies" and she claimed her punctuality problems were because of all the "drama."

She can be a nice person, but that doesn't mean she is responsible - I think she lied about the real reasons she dropped the ball. In reality, it seems like she was broke and couldn't keep promises she made to buyers. She always had money, health, harrassment etc. problems. I've had pneumonia too and it doesn't put you out of commission for 2 months. Her prices were pretty low and she might not have been making enough money.

I thought the quality & price of her products were excellent. However, there are more professional vendors who can actually keep their promises. Her makeup isn't good enough to wait 2 months for the order. I wouldn't risk more than $15 on her site in the future.

  19. Glad I found this...I was thinking of looking up her site to try to order this cool blush I got from her awhile back. The first time I ordered, I bought a sample and I loved it, so when I ordered the full size, I got this super tiny container of blush...like, how was I even supposed to use that? And the color, it wasn't the same as the sample I'd received. I ordered this blush because it was supposed to be like the one used in the movie Burlesque. That iridescent color. Super pretty. I felt kind of cheated because I expected to get a full size blush, like I would when ordering blush from any other company, like Mica Bella. That's how the pic appeared to me. But that 2nd order, it took weeks. A lot of weeks, and then to have it arrive and it only be this tiny little container with a color that lacked all that iridescence, it was disappointing to say the least. I just haven't found that color again...but I'll look somewhere else anyway. Thanks for this post.
